Before & After: How One Trader Stopped Chopping NQ in Replay

A composite trader profile: what changed between blowing three funded accounts and passing on the fourth. Journal patterns, entry filters, and the one rule that reset the equity curve.

Before & After: How One Trader Stopped Chopping NQ in Replay

This is a composite of the top journaled patterns we see across NQ Replay users who blow through evaluations and then pass on the next attempt. Every specific number below reflects patterns we see in aggregate journal data — but the shape of the story is the same one dozens of traders have written to us about.

Before: the chop pattern

Sessions started at 09:30, first trade by 09:34. Average of 6 trades per session. Win rate 41%. R multiple average 0.6. Three losing days a week. The equity curve looked like a fine-toothed saw.

Journal tags told the story: 68% of trades were entered without a marked reference level, and 74% of losers were taken outside a killzone. The setups weren't wrong — the timing and prep were.

The one rule that changed everything

No entry unless it's inside a killzone AND takes out a level I marked before 09:30.

That rule alone reduced trade count from 6 to 1.8 per session and pushed R multiple from 0.6 to 1.9. Not because the setups improved — because 70% of the losing setups never got taken.

After: the disciplined curve

  • Trades per session: 1.8 (down from 6).
  • Win rate: 58% (up from 41%).
  • Average R: 1.9 (up from 0.6).
  • Losing days per week: 1 (down from 3).

How to run the same experiment

Pick your last 20 journaled trades. Tag each one: (a) inside a killzone y/n, (b) took out a pre-marked level y/n. Compute R for the subset where both are yes vs. everything else. The difference will be uncomfortable.

Then run 10 replay sessions where you only take the (a)+(b) subset. If the curve straightens, you've found your filter. If it doesn't, the setup selection is the problem — not the entry timing.
